The Bodybuilder

This piece is made of black walnut, about 17 inches tall. It is finished with multiple, hand rubbed, coats of Danish oil. The arms were made separately and dowelled in place; this allows me to run the grain straight down the arms, which makes the piece stronger.

 I saw a photo of  Lenda Murray, six time winner of the Ms. Olympia award and was inspired to do this piece. This is one of my iconoclastic image series. I started out to show a woman in a traditional man's role. I ended up calling it The Bodybuilder to emphasize that a label of Ms. Olympia still carries the prejudice that men and women are separate and unequal.
